Color coating is an additional option we offer on top of our standard materials — giving you an even wider range of finishes to choose from, while also protecting the surface from UV exposure. Without a coating, the natural color of the material can change over time when exposed to sunlight; the coating keeps the color stable.

Color coating is applied as standard to our Onyx (SH-F01) material, but we also offer it for Dune (SH-C053) and Ash (SH-K01) on request. The coating itself is applied in a thin layer during post-processing, so the rough, sand-like texture of the surface is fully retained — the object still looks and feels like sand, just in a different shade.

The most popular color choices by far are black and dark grey. This isn’t a coincidence: because Onyx (SH-F01) has a naturally dark base material, dark colors sit more evenly and consistently across the surface. Very light or bright colors are more sensitive — the dark base can show through slightly, which may cause some unevenness in the final result.

Because of this, we always recommend ordering a physical color sample before committing to a color for your project — the only exception being black, which is reliable across the board. Samples let you see and feel exactly how a color will look on the finished material.
